Your Desk
Simply by analysing a desk and its contents, employers can learn more about their employees than by studying the most carefully written CV. Unlike the considered contents and layout of a curriculum vitae, desks will reveal the true personality, habits and ambitions of their owners, according to a recent study carried out by Adecco Alfred Marks.
1.The Business-Like, Super-Organised Desktop Personality:
The desktop is taken up by the essential office equipment, leaving little room for clutter. Exhibiting no personal belongings, this desk exudes an aura of quiet power which can be intimidating, but also may disguise a chip on its |

owners' shoulder - due to lack of appreciation. Neither outgoing nor introverted, this personality is subject to mood swings, wants to feel needed and is most charming and helpful when relied upon.
2. The 'Organised Chaos' Desktop Personality:
Would love to be tidy, panics if everything isn't to hand and uses a 'filing system' of different piles of paper, overflowing onto the floor. Deadlines are remembered by a multiple 'post it note' method and work is frequently, though temporarily, lost. The stressed and worried occupant relies on frequent cups of coffee and cigarettes to keep cool. A workaholic, prone to occasional bouts of angst and hysteria, this personality likes to chat to break work monotony, is flexible, adaptable and a good cross thinker.
3. The 'Creative Chaos' Desktop Personality:
An agile and creative mind is revealed by an interesting clutter of books, drawings, photos and notes that reveal varied interests. Occasionally distracted, but a lateral thinker and source of ideas, this individual needs to have things at hand, but only knows vaguely where everything is. Modern technology does not feature strongly. Always on the go, but not in a social whirl - work is the key driving force.
4. The 'Personality Extension' Desktop:
An extension of an outgoing, sociable personality, this desk is covered in personal touches, holiday photos, plants, cuddly animals and zany mouse mats. Surrounding walls are covered in pictures of favourite celebrities. Women may take their 'personality extension' to extremes, even keeping toiletries on their desk. Always on the go, and needing constant refreshment, food and drink is often on display. They need constant entertainment, and although friendly and talkative, are not always discreet!
5. The 'Show' Desktop Personality:
Projects a contrived image of occupant or company. Large and sparsely furnished with no revealing personal effects, it gives the impression of space and control. Occupied by a departmental head, or a high flying PA who is emulating her boss's desk. Possessing a double sided personality, few at work will see beyond the professional facade. Friendly within their social group, once behind the 'show desk', they adopt a professional mask. Astute, and good at assessing strengths and weaknesses.
6. The 'Trophy' Desktop Personality:
Messy and covered in items reflecting the owner's successes - whether social, professional or financial. Each trophy will be strategically placed for maximum effect. Items range from postcards and pictures showing expensive holidays, to sporting or professional trophies. Bright and bold desktop accessories reflect the occupant's outgoing personality. Natural team leaders and good motivators, they think BIG, but need to be appreciated or they are prone to discontent, tantrums and bouts of sulking.
