One night a group of Mark Twains's friends and admirers in New York, remembering it was the writer's birthday, resolved to send him birthday greetings. The globe trotting Twain was away on his travels and none of them knew his address. So they mailed a letter, 'Mark Twain, God Knows Where.' Some weeks later they received an acknowledgement reading simply, 'He did.'

Edgar Allan Poe wrote a short story called the Purloined Letter. It tells how the Paris police ransacked a man's house from top to bottom in search of the letter, which was being used to bribe a powerful women. They knew this man had stolen the letter but they couldn't work out where he had hidden it. they took up the floorboards, they searched for hidden cavities, they emptied all his books - in vain

Then Poe's hero of the story, a private detective, had a brilliant brainwave. He found the letter in the man's letter rack.
